President Jacob Zuma’s ex-wife Dr Nkosazana Clarice Dlamini-Zuma appears to be moving another step closer to becoming South Africa’s next President. It has been revealed on Friday evening that Dr Dlamini-Zuma will be sworn in as an African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament next week.

According to local reports, she will fill one of four vacant positions. The ANC has confirmed the news, but says it is unsure of the exact date when it will take place.

Cynics on Twitter speculated that the move is to allow Dlamini-Zuma to use state funds to finance her presidential campaign. However, ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe told News24 that she did not request this move, but that the ANC leaders felt it was “unfair” to keep her out. She had been in the Top 20 list headed for Parliament before she was made Chairperson of the African Union Commission in 2012.

On Twitter, Dr Dlamini-Zuma describes herself as a gender activist and former Minister of Home Affairs, Foreign Affairs and Health, as well as having held her AU position from 2012 to 2017.

As Minister of Health Dr Dlamini-Zuma implemented policies that allowed for free health care for poor women, and children under the age of six.

She holds a medical degree from the University of Bristol in the UK.
