American filmmaker Mendel Katz, who is married to South African expat Mushkie Lewin, has captured a “short but sweet” documentary about South Africa.

Mendel and Mushkie married last year in July and went for a two-month tour around South Africa for their honeymoon.

“I wanted to go a bit ‘off the beaten path’ instead of the more touristy spots,” he told SAPeople. “I ended up inspired by the story of what has taken place in the country over the past couple decades; and also being aware of the long challenges which remain ahead… and so I made this video of my experience.”

Mendel says: “I also picked up a bit on some of the local politics and was saddened by the current state of Mandela’s party – I know some people may feel like it’s too much ANC in the video! – I don’t intend to glorify them, but as a foreigner in a very broad & historical sense, pay homage to the role the party played in the fall of Apartheid.

Mendel and Mushkie, who is from Sandton, have settled in Los Angeles… although it was in New Jersey that they met… while she was visiting relatives.

Mendel says their honeymoon in South Africa “was my first time in SA… and we’re going back to visit Mushkie’s family at the end of this month (excited!)”

“The inspiration for creating this short is to celebrate how far South Africa has come since Apartheid, while also highlighting it’s long-term battle against poverty.”
