SA Tourism announced: “It’s jacaranda season! ? Each year late September to mid-November, jacaranda trees bloom, turning cities throughout South Africa purple. Not to be missed!”

SA’s annual jacaranda season attracts visits from abroad, including many from Asia… and also triggers a pilgrimage within SA itself… from people wanting to see and photograph the beautiful burst of colour, and purple carpeted pavements as the petals fall.

Although the jacaranda was first imported from Brazil in about 1829, and is therefore included on the government’s list of banned non-indigenous plants… it has become a South African ‘treasure’, and has not been forcefully removed like other invasive foreign plants, although it is forbidden to plant new ones.

It’s often the sign for students to start learning for their end-of-year exams, and the trees were even referred to by former President Nelson Mandela in his inauguration speech in May 1994.

Madiba said: “To my compatriots, I have no hesitation in saying that each one of us is as intimately attached to the soil of this beautiful country as are the famous jacaranda trees of Pretoria and the mimosa trees of the bushveld.”
