Well known ‘dieredoktor‘ Dr Pieter Engelbrecht is happy to be alive after a very close call with a leopard on Tuesday. In a post on Facebook, he described it as “wild Africa on the East Rand”!

All photos from Bapsfontein Animal Hospital. Dr Engelbrecht – “80 kg of pure muscle it is an amazing animal a apex predator.”

The popular South African vet (from Via DSTV 147) got an unexpected call from the farmer that a wild, fully grown male leopard had been cornered by dogs in between farm buildings outside Bapsfontein, just 20 km from OR Tambo International Airport.

Dr Engelbrecht detailed the call-out – to a farm on the Kaalfontein Road – on his Bapsfontein Animal Hospital page.

“I was called by the farmer as this was a potential disastrous situation unfolding. The darting was a high risk procedure… The fence was old and rusted and I had to go right up to it for a clear shot.”

He used just one dart… and as it struck, the leopard charged INSTANTLY.

“I tried my best to stand my ground,” said Dr Engelbrecht, but “the speed the animal moves is frighteningly fast and was onto me within a second.

“I was saved by the old fence and God’s Grace”

“Although I had a wing man with a rifle, I was saved by the old fence and God’s Grace.

“The leopard charged the fence a second time and this time successfully broke through… fortunately at another spot and direction.

“I am glad to be alive to tell the tale.”

His wife, Rinet, told SAPeople she fortunately didn’t know about the call out at the time. “Sjoe, this was close,” she said.

Dr Engelbrecht – “I was concerned that he might have injured himself crushing into the fence but luckily no harm was done.”

Fortunately no dogs were injured by the leopard, and the leopard did not injure itself when it broke through the fence. It then went to sleep between the sheds.
