Former BBC reporter Lisa Ashton travelled to South Africa for the first time in 2004 to make a documentary. She never realised it was going to change her life forever… and help her change the lives of so many impoverished South Africans.

Lisa was inspired, whilst making the doc, by an amazing woman with an open, caring heart – Winnie Mabaso – who went from feeding two hungry children a day to feeding hundreds.

When she passed away, Lisa realised her calling… she had to continue Winnie’s work.

Today, the Winnie Mabaso Foundation, which Lisa founded, is home to 22 abused, abandoned and orphaned children and runs several projects from a gardening scheme and library to feeding stations and workshops. Thanks to Lisa, some young Gauteng children have visited the beach for the first time in their lives, and this week some Grannies in her Wednesday Granny Club visited the Joburg Theatre to watch a ballet for the first time in their lives.

Lisa says “the love and care that they have shown me far outweighs anything that I could do for them…”

And nothing will deter her from continuing Winnie’s legacy… even being held up by seven armed gunmen at the orphanage last year!
