Public Prosecutions boss, Adv Shaun Abrahams, has confirmed that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has started its preparation towards the 783 charges against South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma… and that the evidence is ready, and the witness list is to be finalised by 30 November 2017.

President Jacob Zuma has until 30 November 2017 to make any new representations.

According to DA leader Mmusi Maimane, the NPA National Director Abrahams confirmed the above to him in writing.

Maimane said the DA looks forward to a trial date being set shortly after the witness list is finalised, and “we will now begin preparing for trial”.

Maimane had written to Abrahams after the Supreme Court of Appeal’s decision that the decision to drop 783 charges of corruption, fraud and money laundering was irrational, and set aside.

Abrahams said that if the President wishes to make any new representations on issues not previously considered, he has until 30 November 2017.

While welcoming the news, Maimane also pointed out that Zuma is being given special treatment. “He should be notified of his Court date immediately, like any other accused and the court process should commence,” said Maimane.

He added: “President Zuma himself has stated on numerous occasions that he wants his day in court, and after an 8 and a half year legal fight, we are on the cusp of such a reality…”
