As thousands of South Africans have worn black and gathered around the country to mourn the loss of life – through violent murders of farmers, farm workers and ordinary citizens across the land – it is reported that two farmers have been attacked, one fatally… and that neighbouring farm workers have killed that attacker.

A farmer was killed in South Africa this morning, while thousands gathered in memory of those who have already died this year.

The Herald Live reports that vegetable farmer, Bokkie Potgieter was murdered at around 10h00 as he was building a chicken kraal near Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal.

The attacker allegedly slashed the 73-year-old’s face with a panga while he was trying to steal his bakkie. He then apparently stuffed Potgieter’s body in the vehicle, with his feet sticking out of the window. In a rush to escape, the attacker crashed into a pole.

The paper quotes Potgieter’s neighbour Braam van Niekerk as saying: “Workers from neighbouring farms who were walking to work ran to the vehicle to try and help the driver‚ thinking he was injured.

“When they got there‚ they saw Bokkie’s body. The killer tried to run away but the farm workers caught and killed him.”

The newspaper also reports an alleged attack on a farmer in the Klapmuts area today, where thousands were gathered with the family of Klapmuts farmer Joubert Conradie who was murdered last Tuesday. The farmer has apparently been injured.

AfriForum’s Ian Cameron said: “It’s clear that what affects farmers also affects their workers. They are just as fed up with crime as farmers.

“Their anger is evident with what happened to Potgieter today. Everyone has had enough with the attacks on South Africa’s farms.”
