Ireland celebrated its biggest victory ever over South Africa in a mega 38-3 win for the home team, in Dublin on Saturday.

It was more than just the luck of the Irish. The Springboks sadly did not perform well in this, the first of their Northern Hemisphere tour. In fact it was one of their worst performances ever. They appeared to be more like the team who lost 57-0 to New Zealand in September than the team who lost by only one point (24-25) in a thrilling match against New Zealand in October.

Ireland has been on fire in the last couple of years though – last year they made world headlines with their unexpected win against the All Blacks (making history then too as it was their first ever win against the all-mighty New Zealand team).

The Irish team streaked ahead of South Africa in the first half, with three penalties and a try, leading by 14-0 by half-time. The Boks game was full of errors… and in the last 10 minutes of the match they truly lost it, and the Irish added another three tries to their score.

The Springboks had lost Coenie Oosthuizen – within a minute of the start of the match – to injury (after a tackle by Bundi Aki), and it was  basically downhill from there.

In some good news, South Africa’s Elton Jantjies converted a penalty, earning the Springboks their only points, and passing the 200 point milestone.

But on the whole the biggest clash between the two teams was between their similar jerseys! (See the tweets below.)

South Africa will play France next week, before heading to Italy (and this year we have to win after last year’s historic loss to Italy!) and then Wales.
