Zimbabwe Update: Mugabe Granted Immunity and First Pic Since Resignation Goes Viral

Former President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe has reportedly been granted immunity from prosecution, and assured hsafety to live out the rest of his life in Zimbabwe, as part of his resignation deal.

South Africans, who were outraged at the prospect of him retiring in SA, can breathe a sigh of relief. It is not his dream. (In fact just today the DA wrote to President Jacob Zuma and relevant Ministers, to “put them on terms to not entertain granting” Mugabe and his wife political asylum in SA as they believe it would illegal and in contravention of the Refugees Act.

Reuters reports that 93-year-old Mugabe told his negotiators that he wished to die in the country he ruled for 37 years, and had “no plans to live in exile”. The source revealed his resignation was prompted by his party, Zanu-PF, beginning the impeachment process… and he did not want to leave in an undignified manner.

The first picture of Mugabe and his wife Grace since the historic resignation on Tuesday has gone viral on social media, Thursday morning.

A Reuters source told the news agency that Mugabe was “very emotional” and “forceful” about his request. He will still travel. It’s believed he travels often to Singapore for medical reasons.

Former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa – who had fled to South Africa after being fired by Mugabe a couple of weeks ago (which set in motion the non-coup coup by the military) – is expected to be sworn in as Zimbabwe’s new president tomorrow, Friday 24 November 2017.
