The ANC Women’s League President, Bathabile Dlamini, has criticised Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa for his support of the late Fezekile ‘Khwezi’ Khuzwayo (who alleged she was raped by Jacob Zuma), and hinted that Ramaphosa has his own history of abuse.

In a move seen by many as strange for someone who is meant to represent women’s rights, Dlamini blasted Ramaphosa for “cheap politicking” during his interview with Radio 702 a couple of days ago.

Zuma was acquitted in 2006 (before becoming President of South Africa in 2009) and although Ramaphosa said he takes heed of the court’s decision, he added: “I know how difficult and painful it is for a woman to garner up the courage and stand up and say “yes, I was raped”. It must be one of the most difficult decisions that she has to make, so, yes, I would believe her.”

Speaking at a rally near Durban in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday, Dlamini reportedly said: “If you want to speak out about violence against women and children – talk about yourself! You must open up… because you said you know how difficult it is for a woman to take a stand on this issue. And you do have the experience.”

According to EWN, she said afterwards that if Ramaphosa continues in this way “we are going to call people who are prepared to talk about his history”.

Ramaphosa’s fellow contender in the race to become President of the ANC, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, delivered the keynote address at the rally yesterday. She declined to comment on Ramaphosa’s interview.

At a nearby church in KZN, Ramaphosa said: “I’m one of those who has raised their hands to be elected so I’m appealing to you to also pray for the conference to go well and me also to be successful.”
