Cape Town Toddler Tragically Drowns in Drought-Fighting Water Bin

CAPE TOWN – Grieving Rondebosch parents Daniel and Debbie Weber invited friends and family around the world to celebrate their “beautiful boy’s life” at 10h30 on Tuesday morning… as they gathered, all wearing bright clothes, at one of his favourite places – Tractor Park in Keurboom, Western Cape of South Africa.

The couple tragically lost their 20-month-old son, Connor, after he drowned in a bin of water that was apparently being used as a water collection point during Cape Town’s devastating drought.

Like many South African children, Connor and his sister Grace were being looked after by their nanny while their parents were at work last week.

When the nanny realised Connor was missing she immediately looked for him, and sadly discovered him in the bin. His heart was still beating, and he was transported to Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital… where he unfortunately died days later on Sunday.

ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring, told local media: “It is believed that the toddler had apparently fallen into a bin filled with water. Local authorities were on the scene and will be investigating further.”

Connor’s uncle, Stuart West, told IOL “we are absolutely devastated” and “we miss him and we miss running after him. As a family there is great disappointment and anger. It’s tragic.”

West also stressed that “in a time of our drought when there’s lots of water lying around, we need to raise awareness that little children are vulnerable to these kinds of things.”
