It doesn’t matter where in the world a South African is, or how long they’ve been away, most South African expats feel a deep connection with SA forever… and there’s nothing that takes an expat back home faster than traditional SA treats.

So when it comes to special occasions like Christmas and Easter, many South Africans abroad like to cook up an SA feast, and celebrate with the same familiar tastes and aromas of their upbringing…

Charl Folscher, whose family moved to Saint Paul, Massachusetts, 17 years ago, captured this video… on a freezing cold day in the USA. Charl (and his wife and baby) were visiting from Dallas where he now lives.

Charl told SAPeople: “The parents cooked up Christmas food that we traditionally have as a family in South Africa. It’s tasty and probably not healthy. Only for the soul.”

The Folscher’s version of an SA Christmas meal includes “soet patat, brokkolie witsous en kaas, geelrys en rosyntjies, sous vir whatever, gebraaide artappels and boudvleis“, he says.
