The African National Congress (ANC) has scheduled a special meeting with the National Executive Committee (NEC) on Monday afternoon to “finalise” the future of President Jacob Zuma as the head of the country.

“As you have all heard, the national executive committee of the African National Congress will be meeting [Monday] to discuss this very matter. Because our people want this matter to be finalised, the national executive committee will be doing precisely that,” ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa said while addressing the public at the Grand Parade in Cape Town to officially launch the party’s Centennial in honour of former president Nelson Mandela.

Ramaphosa said that the country wants closure on this matter.

“We know you want closure on this matter. Comrades, as you want closure, we will be doing so by keeping our eyes on what is in the interest of all our people and how we continue to unite the nation,” Ramaphosa said.

Ramaphosa says that it is important that the ANC manage the discussions with care and purpose, ensuring that it places the interests of the South African people first.

“The key objective is uniting our people. If you look at the way in which Mandela handled challenges in his presidency, he was always very careful,” he said.

Ramaphosa continued to praise the struggle stalwart Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, remembering how he “put the interests of our people first and he was clear about uniting South Africans and the ANC”.

The ruling party has declared 2018 as the year of Nelson Mandela.

Mandela centenary year offers us what I would call a new beginning

Sunday marked 28 years since Mandela was released from prison in 1990, spending 27 years in jail. He addressed thousands of people at the same venue were Ramaphosa was addressing the public.

“As we emerge from a period of difficulty, a period of disunity and discord, this Nelson Mandela centenary year offers us what I would call a new beginning,” Ramaphosa said.

The meeting will be held at St George Hotel in Irene‚ Pretoria.

Gauteng ANC member, Hangwi Maumela – and spokesperson for a group called #ZumaMustGo – had called for a national shutdown in South Africa today, if talks about President Jacob Zuma’s exit plan were not concluded. However he told local reporters that their members had been intimidated by a “group of armed thugs” in a white bakkie.

Interestingly, the SA Government’s tweet this morning was: “Good morning SA! We wish you a wonderful week. In whatever you plan to do, remember, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.”

Meanwhile the Leaders of Opposition Parties in Parliament have said they will brief the media at 15h00 today in Cape Town, following a meeting held this morning to discuss a “number of pressing issues of national importance”.
