Opposition party leaders met Monday to discuss a way forward for South Africa while the ANC continue its talks with President Jacob Zuma at an NEC meeting about the transition to new leadership. During a press briefing after its meeting, the opposition parties said they want Parliament to be dissolved and a motion of no confidence to be tabled this week.

The members at the meeting included: Julius Malema (EFF), Mmusi Maimane (DA), Bantu Holomisa (UDM), Mosioua Lekota. (COPE), Dr Corne Mulder (FF+), Luthando Mbinda (PAC),  Godrich Gardee (EFF) and Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi (EFF).

Maimane said that since the Constitutional Court judged in December that Parliament had failed in its duty to hold President Zuma accountable, the opposition parties want to move for the dissolution of Parliament… which would lead to an early election.

He said once Zuma is removed, cabinet must resign or the interim president must call for parliament to be dissolved.

Malema pointed out that in their opinion the problem is not just Zuma but the ANC itself. He referred to those at the ANC meeting as the “NEC of drunkards”, and said “we are not part of ANC factional battles. We are not for Cyril [Ramaphosa]. He is like Zuma, they are the same.”

Malema said it’s not a transition, it’s a swopping “from one corrupt to another”.

Maimane said the opposition leaders have resolved that Parliament must sit immediately. He said South Africa is now beyond a Presidential transition period and if Ramaphosa can’t do it, let Parliament.

The EFF said the Opposition Parties  are calling on the “removal of Zuma and dissolution of parliament towards an early election”.

They said they are using two clauses of the Constitution to remove a President and Dissolve Parliament and go on to an early Election: Sections 102 and 50.
