The ‘Distracted Boyfriend’ meme has been popular around the world – depicting a disgruntled girlfriend looking at her boyfriend looking at another woman – and is even up for a Shorty Award (recognising great social media content)…

But perhaps nobody has nailed ‘Distracted Boyfriend’ as well as this photoshopped version from South Africa, which has gone viral:

Distracted boyfriend - Ramaphosa and Maimane

Greg Lynch posted the photo on facebook, saying: “Perfect meme-age. Who ever did this should win something… 10/10.”

It features of course the wonderful fawning gentleman at the V&A Waterfront on Thursday night, who was captured in a photo by model Lee-Ann Lieberberg with his hands clasped, as brand new President Cyril Ramaphosa – who had been sworn in just hours before – walked past. (See the original below.)

The photoshopped picture depicts the gentleman gazing at Ramaphosa (on the left of the pic), while an annoyed DA Leader Mmusi Maimane (on the right) looks on.

In fact, one of the photos almost reflects the original ‘Distracted Boyfriend’… except this time it appears to be Distracted Girlfriend!

Well known South African writer Gus Silber said: “Internet memes are the new political cartoons. And we’re only on day two of the Reign of Ramaphosa…”
