Listeriosis

The Listeriosis outbreak has wreaked havoc across South Africa.  Now with over 900 confirmed cases and 180 people dead including infants and children, the Health Department has finally made a breakthrough in finding the source of the deadly disease.  As families come to terms with their devastating losses, could a major class action lawsuit be on the cards for those affected? Day Zero

The fear of the whole of Cape Town queuing for water galvanised residents into action – they brought down their water consumption to just over 500 million litres a day and pushed back Day Zero yet again through their concerted efforts. Some have developed innovative ways to use their swimming pools as reservoirs, while others are spreading their water saving solutions online. Pioneering water treatment is on the cards combining desalination and waste water, and boreholes are being sunk, but have all their efforts been enough to prevent the taps from running dry? Leaky Legacy

leaky legacy

Since 2014 Minister Nomvula Mokonyana has been the custodian of the country’s water resources.  But just before the recent cabinet reshuffle, in which she was appointed to head up communications, her spokesman said the department had made great progress in supplying water to the unserved. But not everyone is impressed with the way she has managed her department. The Auditor General has questioned whether DWS is even a going concern, with billions recorded in irregular expenditure. Last week SCOPA chairperson Themba Godi had had enough, and when officials fumbled their answers, he closed the meeting and announced there would be a parliamentary inquiry and a criminal case opened against the department. The Economic Freedom Fighters

They’re loud and abrasive and they’ve been disrupting South African politics since their inception.  From pushing Jacob Zuma to pay back the money, free higher education and a constitutional amendment to allow for land expropriation without compensation – the Economic Freedom Fighters, are credited with changing the country’s political landscape.  Carte Blanche analyses a political party on the rise.(Producer: Graham Coetzer;Presenter: Macfarlane Moleli)
