Thanks to a concerted effort by caring South Africans – both those who donated and those who collaborated in the field – a baby rhino… lost and alone in the wild, was tracked down and saved yesterday from certain death.

The call for urgent donations to help search for the baby rhino went out yesterday as conservation teams worked together, just three hours outside of Johannesburg, to locate the young rhino.

And fortunately… they succeeded!

Hoedspruit charity Rhino Revolution said today that the four-month old rhino will be going to Care for the Wild, the nearest facility to where she was found in Mpumalanga.

She has been identified as a female, making her even more valuable for the survival of the species… which is being hunted to extinction by poachers.

Rhino Revolution said: “After being on her own for a number of days, and the trauma she has lived through, she will need a lot of care and rehabilitation.

“Thank you again to everyone who made a donation to keep the helicopter flying all day, and congratulations to all the rhino teams who worked together to rescue her.”

The charity said it had been an “inspiring collaboration and fantastic team effort with the Mpumulanga rhino charities – everyone working together to save this calf.

“Thank YOU everybody for your donations, and thank you to our vet nurses Jade Aldridge & Natalie Rogers and Nats Stockenstrom for working so hard to create the fundraising campaign to raise the funds to keep the helicopter flying.”
