South Africans living overseas who have not yet registered to vote, may now do so at South African missions abroad.

South African voters in the 2014 General Elections

DA Abroad Leader Francine Higham says the DA Abroad welcomes the Department of International Relations and Cooperation’s (DIRCO) recent instruction to SA missions abroad to allow South Africans living overseas to register to vote for the upcoming National Elections.

“The 2019 general elections will be the most important since the first democratic election in 1994,” says Higham.

She says: “As South Africans abroad, we have a key part to play in our country’s future… No matter where you are in the world, you have the responsibility to go to the polls and make your voices heard.”

In order to vote it is essential for South Africans living abroad to get registered.

If you have voted in South Africa before…

it is not necessary to re-register to vote abroad. You can simply check your registration status on the IEC website:
www.elections.org.za/content/For-voters/My-voter-registration-details

Please Note: When checking your registration details, you may see a message that indicates that you’re required to re-register due to changes to your voting district boundaries, but this message only applies to voters living in South Africa. Registered voters now living abroad are not required to re-register.

Between now and the elections, there will be an opportunity to inform the IEC that you plan to vote abroad by submitting a VEC10 form after the President announces the date of the election.

DON’T MISS THE VEC10 FORM: Many South African expats missed out on voting in the last National Elections because they didn’t realise that they needed to submit a VEC10. Feel free to send us your email address to admin@sapeople.com (or fill in the form at the bottom of the page) and we will send you an alert as soon as the online VEC10 form becomes available to submit.

If you are not yet registered to vote in South Africa…

you can apply to register at your nearest South African Embassy, High Commission or Consulate-General during their normal office hours.

Contact your closest foreign mission to confirm the best time to go in and register:
http://www.dirco.gov.za/foreign/sa_abroad/index.htm

Please note that it is not possible to register or vote at honorary consulates or liaison offices.

In order to register abroad, you will have to apply in person and have the following documentation at hand:

  • An ID document or Smart ID card or Valid Temporary ID Certificate (TIC)
  • A valid SA passport (i.e. not expired)

Once registered you will need to submit a VEC10 form once it becomes available. Fill in the form at the bottom of the page and we will send you an alert as soon as the online VEC10 form becomes available to submit.

Ahead of the elections in 2019, it is expected that there will be overseas voter registration weekends for South Africans abroad, as there was last time.
