At least one cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle was attacked and robbed in Cape Town on Monday morning, in the latest in an epidemic of CIT heists nationwide in South Africa.

The most recent attack occurred along Jakes Gerwel Drive, near Hanover Park, just a couple of hundred metres from Philippi police station.

Witnesses reported hearing a bomb, and gun shots being fired. Jenni Evans from News24 tweeted from the scene that forensics police were collecting evidence bags and that there were at least “58 luminous green markers to mark each bullet casing”. She said there were also dark green and yellow markings on the road, but that police had not yet issued details on any injuries… “but it must have been a massive shootout”.

Waves of CIT Heists have been gripping the country, and in this year alone there have been more than 160 heists according to Carte Blanche. The current affairs show took a closer look at CIT heists just last night – investigating the latest methods being used and what authorities are doing to curb the crime wave. Carte Blanche cautions that as CIT heists are becoming more prevalent in suburban areas, the chances of civilians getting caught up in the heist becomes more probable. The show lists tips on its website on what to do if you’re caught up in a heist – including run and hide in a building if you can, if you’re in a car don’t stop, don’t be a hero, report it immediately to the police (10111) and seek free trauma counselling.
