The African National Congress (ANC) says it is dismayed by the fact that one of its employees was arrested and “appeared in court, allegedly for involvement in serious crimes”.

It was confirmed by Democratic Alliance (DA) Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba today that one of four suspects arrested in connection with a Cash-in-Transit (CIT) crime in Soweto, Gauteng, is reportedly an employee of the ANC, based at Luthuli House at the time of his arrest.

CIT crimes in South Africa have escalated this year – over 160 incidents, according to Carte Blanche – with AK47 shoot-outs on highways and residential streets making international news.

Carte Blanche did an in-depth investigation last month into the epidemic (which you can stream here if you’re overseas: http://bit.ly/CarteBlancheJuly) to uncover why criminal organisations had become so brazen.

ANC Spokesperson Pule Mabe said today: “Crime remains a serious cancer in our young democracy, and we must continue to fight it in whatever of its manifestations.

“We support the efforts by the law enforcement agencies to investigate, arrest and charge perpetrators to such high priority crimes.

“The ANC on its part is following its internal disciplinary policy for employees, and will ensure that appropriate action is taken.”

The DA in Gauteng claims it was thanks to the “determined action” by Mayor Mashaba and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPPD) that the suspects were tracked down and arrested.

The heist had taken place in Dobsonville, Soweto, earlier in July.
