The South African medical field continues to perform pioneering surgeries… with this week’s Carte Blanche highlighting a brain surgery technique that’s changing lives. This week’s episode also looks at how South Africans are facing a challenging year! The programme investigated the knock-on effects of the core increases in our tough economy… with buying power slashed by 30%. (This episode is available for South Africans abroad to watch from Tuesday 7 August 2018 if you subscribe to Showmax.)

Transorbital Surgery

Brain surgery is one of the most common operations for tumours, where skilled surgeons have to cut bone from the skull to be able to operate.

It’s a complex and dangerous surgery with long recovery periods and high risk of complications.

Now a team of South African surgeons have developed a surgical technique that’s changing lives. Through the eye sockets and nostrils to some parts of the brain – that’s how specialists are now performing these complex surgeries.

Carte Blanche explores this remarkable innovation.

For years, analysts, banks and ratings agencies promoted global retailer Steinhoff as a sound investment. With 40 brands under its belt and operating in over 30 territories, the retail giant was one of the top performers on world markets, that is, until the House of Cards came tumbling down.

Billionaire businessman and former chairman of the company Christo Wiese is suing Steinhoff for R59 billion, but was he really unaware of the accounting fraud and financial irregularities happening right under his nose?

Carte Blanche puts Wiese in the hot seat. (Producer: Mart Mari Faure; Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender)
