A beautiful concept was introduced in South Africa about a year ago – it’s called ‘The Donor Pause’ – and has been practised in other countries like Japan (see pic below).

According to Facebook page “Love Life; Gift Life” – which aims to significantly increase the number of organ transplants in South Africa each year – the Donor Pause takes place in ICU (Intensive Care Units) or Theater, or both… and often involves the donor family as well.

“A moment of silence takes place to show respect to the donor, acknowledge the donor family and reflecting on the fact that lives will be saved as a result of the procedure that is about to take place.

“We love this gesture and are very proud of our procurement transplant coordinators who facilitate this.”

We love this gesture too…

(Please note: the photo itself is not from SA, but has been used by Love Life Gift Life to demonstrate the beautiful practise. The transplant coordinators in SA do not take pictures of this, and even if they did, would understandably not share it on Facebook.)
