A Helping Hand

The drought has taken its toll in large parts of South Africa and farmers in the Karoo are still on their knees praying for rain. Sutherland has seen the worst; farmers have had to sell their prized livestock for as little as R30 to avoid starvation.

Now a group of young men, rescued from the Cape Flats – where communities are held hostage by gangs that rule the streets – are giving hope to these farmers, and helping them survive one of the worst droughts of a century. (Producer: Annalise Lubbe, Presenter: Macfarlane Moleli)

Home for Christmas: Colonel Will Endley

william endly

Retired SANDF Colonel William Endley waited two years for his day in court. A military advisor on the wrong side of the war in South Sudan, Endley was found guilty of attempting to overthrow the government and was sentenced to death by hanging. He was preparing himself for death when a presidential pardon as part of the South Sudanese peace process earlier this month secured his release. Carte Blanche recounts what the ordeal has cost Endley and his family. (Producers: Efpé Senekal, Presenter: Derek Watts)

How Safe is Your Car?

How much do you think about safety when you are buying a new car? And can you get an affordable car that will protect you in the event of an accident? South African vehicle manufacturers and importers say they take motorists’ safety very seriously. But after a series of internationally recognised tests by the Global New Car Assessment Programme, the AA is not convinced. Carte Blanche takes a look at the findings. (Producer: Joy Summers, Presenter: Derek Watts, Researcher: Tony Beamish)

(Producer: Siniketiwe Hlanze, Presenter: Macfarlane Moleli)
