Here’s all the proof you need that many SA citizens remain proudly South African, even when they’re living abroad… and that no matter how old you are, you can learn to belt out the SA anthem, Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika.

Gorgeous four-year-old Allegra Garofalo – whose family left South Africa when she was a baby – surprised shoppers in the Netherlands on Wednesday when she belted out the anthem at full volume, and brought tears to fellow South African expats who happened to be shopping in the Amsterdam supermarket.

It had been an exciting day for Allegra, snowing all day… so when her dad picked her up she was in such high spirits, she started very enthusiastically singing the anthem!

Allegra’s father, Mical Duan Garofalo, told SAPeople – “She was 6 months old when we moved to the Netherlands. She learnt the anthem here and is quickly picking up other the lyrics to other South African songs!”

Back home in SA, Allegra’s aunt – Elicia Badenhorst – was in tears when her brother sent the video. “We miss them, and felt so proud hearing Allegra sing the anthem,” Elicia Badenhorst  told SAPeople. “Other South Africans in the supermarket ran to my brother when they heard this little girl sing the anthem. In tears she said I miss SA and it is great to see other South Africans.

“Wherever you are in the world, you get very teary eyed when you hear your anthem.”
