“While filming interviews for our story on the installation of suburb surveillance cameras, our presenter and crew were held at gunpoint and robbed!” says an incredulous Carte Blanche.

The Carte Blanche team was filming an insert about tech platform Vumacam’s installation of CCTV cameras across Johannesburg (see above) in the latest fight against crime in South Africa.

Amid spiking crime rates – and with a view to extending Vumacam’s coverage nationwide – the cameras have encountered mixed reactions about the ethics involved. Big Brother or Guardian Angel?

Vumacam – Big Brother or Guardian Angel?

Symptomatic of the need for greater safety, Carte Blanche presenter Masa Kekana and crew were held at gunpoint and robbed while filming this insert.

So while Vumacam raises the spectre of Big Brother looming, Carte Blanche asks how willing South Africans may be to trade privacy for the promise of 24/7 surveillance? (They wouldn’t be the first. In Monaco, a 24-hour video surveillance – which covers the entire surface area of the Principality – makes it one of the safest places to live on earth.) Presenter: Masa Kekana

As patients face agonising waiting lists, Carte Blanche investigates the unfolding cardiology crisis in the province. Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender
