Election results have been trickling in overnight in South Africa, and current data shows that the ruling African National Congress (ANC) is enjoying an early lead nationally.

With just over 26 percent of the voting districts having completed their counting so far, the results up on the leader board at the IEC’s National Results Operation Centre in Pretoria, are far from final. But so far this is how it looks:

  • The ANC is enjoying a lead of 1,790,832 (55.07 %) voter support nationally.
  • This is followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) with 844,345 (25.96 %) votes
  • The red berets, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), are at 269,166 (8.28 %) votes.

According to the data so far from the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) early this morning, the voter turnout was at 64.84 %.

Data shows the smaller parties were suffering as the contest seems to be between the ANC, DA and the EFF.

In terms of the provincial government breakdown:

  • Gauteng: ANC were so far leading (over 53% compared to the DA’s 25% and EFF’s 13%)
  • Western Cape: DA leading, followed by ANC. Newcoming party GOOD has so far gained over 3 %
  • KZN: ANC leading with IFP and DA following
  • Limpopo: ANC leading followed by EFF and then the DA
  • Eastern Cape: ANC leading, followed by DA and EFF
  • Free State: ANC leading, followed by DA and EFF
  • Mpumalanga: ANC leading, trailed by DA and EFF
  • North West: ANC leading, followed by EFF and then DA
  • N. Cape: ANC leading, followed by DA and EFF
