A Memorial Service for legendary South African musician Johnny Clegg will be held on Friday 26 July in Sandton, Johannesburg.

Since Tuesday, when 66-year-old Clegg passed away after a four-year battle with pancreatic cancer, fans in South Africa and around the world have been mourning the passing of a man who was a gifted musician and humanitarian, using music to transcend colour and unite South Africans.

Clegg was laid to rest in a private ceremony on Wednesday 17 July, said Friends of Johnny Clegg.

The public are invited to pay their respects to the icon on Friday at 12h30 at The Sandton Convention Centre, 161 Maude St, Sandton, Johannesburg.

“Admission to the Memorial Service is free but in order to reserve a seat please collect your ticket at any Computicket store/outlet from 09h00 on Sunday 21st July. There will also be an unreserved standing area,” said Friends of Johnny Clegg in a media statement.

“Johnny Clegg’s family thank everyone for the outpouring of support during their time of loss, and have asked that donations be made to The Click Foundation through the Friends of Johnny Clegg campaign instead of sending or laying flowers,” they said.

In a message on their site, Friends of Johnny Clegg said:

Hamba Kahle dear friend, may the spirit of your great heart live on in all that we do.

Johnny Clegg represented all that is great about South Africa. He embodied the fighting spirit and vision required to transcend into a better future for all. Leading from the front, he has shown how social barriers and prejudices can be broken with his music and in doing so, has instilled an awareness of other cultures while truly creating a meaningful change.

Thank you for your continued support!

Carte Blanche will feature a special tribute this Sunday to Clegg – watch in SA on DStv Now or stream it on Showmax afterwards if you’re overseas (in many, but sorry, not all countries!).
