A young six-year-old girl – Amy-Lee de Jager – has been kidnapped outside her school, College Park Primary School (Laerskool Kollegepark) in South Africa, on Monday morning. According to local reports, the kidnappers have demanded a ransom of R2-million. UPDATE: Amy-Lee has been found.

Earlier this morning, Laerskool Kollegepark in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, posted a photo of Amy-Lee with the message (in Afrikaans): “Hierdie meisie is uit haar ma se motor geruk deur 4 bravo mans in ‘a Fortuner voor Laerskool Kollegepark. Hulle het met haar weg gejaag ongeveer 7:30. Wees asseblief op die uitkyk. Haar naam is Amy-Lee. Sy is 6 jaar oud.” (“This girl was hauled out of her mother’s car by 4 ‘bravo’ men in a Fortuner in front of Laerskool Kollegepark. They took off with her at around 07h30. Please be on the look out for her. Her name is Amy-Lee. She is 6-years-old.”)

According to local reports, Amy-Lee and her mom and brother were getting out of their car when the kidnappers pushed her brother out of the way to grab her.

Klerksdorp Concerned Citizens said the white Toyota Fortuner had no registration. They asked people to be on the lookout for the little brunette who was wearing a pink dress, white shirt and black leggings.

The kidnappers have made contact with her father, according to Klerksdorp Concerned Citiziens. They said reports of her being found are false, and refer to another minor who is 16-years-old; and ask that all those who receive a voice note about that please delete it and do not spread untrue news.

According to News24 the kidnappers are demanding R2-million for her release. A police spokesperson told the media outlet that a manhunt has been launched.

Netwerk24 says that the Fortuner was last seen on the R82 near to Meyerton.

UPDATE: Speaking to Eyewitness News (EWN), Amy-Lee’s grandfather, Martin Brouwers, said police negotiators are handling the situation with the kidnapped Grade R learner. He told EWN that his daughter (Amy-Lee’s mom) was still in shock. He said: “My daughter was dropping off the kids off at school and when the two little ones climbed out, Angeline walked around the side to take Amy-Lee out and a guy just bumped little Jayden out the way and grabbed Amy-Lee, jumped into the car and they started flying off. Angeline tried to hold onto the car and she couldn’t hold on and got seriously hurt.” (Listen here.)

UPDATE: Amy-Lee de Jager – kidnapped in Joburg, South Africa – has been safely returned home.

Last year current affairs show Carte Blanche did an investigation into the rising number of kidnappings in South Africa, particularly of wealthy business owners, saying the activity was fast becoming the latest “money-making operation for brutal, organised crime syndicates who demand multi-million rand ransoms”. You can watch Carte Blanche here if you’re in SA or here if you live abroad (sorry not all countries).
