In a historic move, Donald Trump has been impeached… although that does not mean he will stop being the President of the United States. That is a decision that can only be made by the Senate. And in an incredible outburst he appeared to attack a widow for voting to impeach him, as if she owed him something for giving her husband a state funeral.

It is now in the hands of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who is expected to send the impeachment articles to the Senate. She would not yet divulge when she will do this. The Senate would then need to hold a trial to decide whether to remove President Trump from office or not.

Trump becomes the third US President to be impeached and charged with “high crimes and misdemeanours”, and in the previous two cases they were acquitted by the Senate.

The House of Representatives voted on Wednesday evening, after eight hours of debates, to impeach Trump for his campaign pressuring the Ukraine to investigate a political rival.

On the charge of abuse of power, the vote was split 230 to 197 with two Democrats siding with Republicans.

On the charge of obstruction of Congress, the vote was 229 to 198.

The Democrats described it as a “solemn day” and said they took no joy in impeaching the President. Pelosi said: “If we do not act now, we would be derelict in our duty. It is tragic that the president’s reckless actions make impeachment necessary. He gave us no choice.”

President Trump’s Reaction to Impeachment

Speaking from a campaign rally in Battle Creek, Michigan, President Trump lashed out at a local Democratic representative Debbie Dingell, saying he regretted that she had voted to impeach him despite him allowing for a state funeral for her late husband, John Dingell, and giving her husband “the A+ treatment”!

He also implied that Dingell’s husband may be in hell, “looking up”.

Dingell responded in a tweet saying: “Mr. President, let’s set politics aside. My husband earned all his accolades after a lifetime of service. I’m preparing for the first holiday season without the man I love. You brought me down in a way you can never imagine and your hurtful words just made my healing much harder.”

In order for President Trump to be removed from his position, a Republican-led Senate would need two thirds of the vote.
