The mayor of Welkom, Nkosinjani Speelman, has been suspended because of “blatant racism” when he referred to members of the coloured community as “boesman.”

Speelman used the word on Tuesday while talking about residents of the Bronville township, traditionally a coloured area outside Welkom. Calling his remarks “racist and regrettable,” the Free State ANC temporarily suspended him as an ANC member and public representative. Speelman was mayor of Matjhabeng Local Municipality that includes Welkom.

Vrye Weekblad editor Max du Preez said, “This ANC mayor is no better than racist Adam Catzevelos, only he has power – actually encouraged soldiers to beat up the “boesmans”. Naked racism. Criminal charges should be brought.”

Freedom Front Plus said in a statement criticising his “blatant racism” that Speelman should have been suspended long ago.

Speelman made the remark while addressing a SA National Defence Force operation to check whether people were breaking lockdown. He apologised in a later video (in which he again use the racist word).
