A surprise drive-by baby shower in South Africa has moved social media users to tears on social media.

The video was posted on Facebook by Dinika Rooy from Buffalo Flats, East London. She said: “We are truly blessed. ?Drive by – Drop off Baby Shower… ??” One of her friends replied: “Your heart is made of Gold. You inspire! You will always be blessed ??”

It has since received over 1 million views on Facebook and has been shared wildly on Twitter too, where it was uploaded by Lerato Mpunzi (@Leratompunzi1), a make-up enthusiast, who said: “Drive-by baby shower is so cute you guys❤❤❤”

Lerato posted two videos (see below) showing the moving and thoughtful gesture of friends who lined up in their cars, hooting in celebration, to drop off baby shower gifts in the drive-way. Dinika told local media outlets that her initial baby shower had had to be cancelled because of Lockdown, and this was a total surprise. In fact she was asleep when her mother woke her to come outside and see all her friends lined up to shower her with baby gifts.

Aside from a few concerns over the lack of social-distancing every now and then, and the pregnant mom-to-be touching packages and her face without wiping the packets first or wearing gloves… most people simply expressed their joy and emotion at watching the videos.

One said: “Covid 19 has nothing on the hearts of South Africans” (although to be fair, these drive-by baby showers have already been happening in other parts of the world too).

Vuka Muntu Omnyama said: “The amount of Love and UBUNTU God put in our heart is greater than any wealth you can find on this earth. This is beautiful!!”

Many said how much they were crying and posted photos of broken hearts.

“This is so cute and so sad,” said one Twitter user, adding, “This isn’t how life should be.”

The resilience, consideration and thoughtfulness of the friends was praised, and the video was called “precious”, “beautiful”, “adorable” and the “cutest thing I have seen on the internet since the lockdown has began”.
