Questions have been raised about the suicide in custody on Sunday of one of two men arrested in connection with the murder of five women in Mthwalume in KwaZulu-Natal, after he told police there were more bodies to be found. The Democratic Alliance has called for an investigation.

The two men, aged 35 and 40, were arrested on Friday following the discovery of the fifth body of an unidentified woman in a sugar cane field, allegedly in possession of cell phones and SIM cards of the deceased women. They were due to appear in court today.

Police Minister Bheki Cele, who addressed media outside the court, said the death of the main suspect has posed a challenge, as prosecutors did not have a strong case against the second suspect.

The DA called on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) boss, Jennifer Dikeledi Ntlatseng, to investigate the matter, for the real killer could still be roaming the streets.

Cele said the remaining suspect was still the subject of the investigation, and that Ipid had taken over the investigation. Before his death, the main suspect told the police that more bodies were buried in the sugar cane fields, Cele said.

“We’ve told the police that there are more bodies buried in the area [and] we have strengthened the team investigating the case. We’ve put more investigators, more skilled people, forensics and psychologists, to make sure that we leave no stone unturned,” Cele said.
