Former Proteas cricketer Vernon Philander has asked for his family’s privacy to be respected as they recover from the horrific fatal shooting of his younger brother Tyrone in Cape Town yesterday.

Vernon said: “Our family is coming to terms with the brutal murder in my hometown of Ravensmead earlier (yesterday). I would like to ask that the family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.”

Thirty-two year old Tyrone was reportedly shot at around 13h00 on the corner of 7th Avenue and Webner Street in Ravensmead.

Vernon (35) said: “The murder is now the subject of a police investigation and we respectfully ask that the media give the police the space to conduct a thorough investigation. There are no details around the incident at the moment and speculation will make it very difficult for us as a family to mourn in peace.”

The family said in a statement that it is “grateful for the messages of support received since news broke that our beloved Tyrone Philander was shot and killed in Ravensmead on Wednesday.”

Vernon, who retired from international cricket at the start of this year, thanked all those who offered their condolences, especially members of the public.

He said: “Tyrone is forever in our hearts. May his soul rest in peace.”
