The South African Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, has sent his condolences following a shocking fatal accident in KwaZulu-Natal in which 13 family members tragically perished, while two others sustained serious injuries.

Fikile said: “We are deeply saddened by this horrific collision. These untimely deaths have left a void in the lives of many. We urge motorists to exercise extreme caution, so as to save their own lives and those of their fellow road users.”

According to the Department of Transport, the youngest child who died in the collision was two-years-old, whilst the oldest person was 61.

The crash took place in Kilimon, near Underberg, on Saturday afternoon (10 Oct), when a minibus taxi rolled down an embankment, after the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Meanwhile in Gauteng, 27 drunk drivers were arrested in West Rand last night during an operation in which the Gauteng Lieutenant General Elias Mawela and Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Ms Faith Mazibuko spent almost the whole night in the streets of Randfontein, Bekkersdal and Westonaria.

These were just a handful of the 1,000 suspects caught by Gauteng police over the weekend for a range of crimes from those breaking level 1 Covid-19 lockdown regulations (like liquor outlets operating after midnight) to possession of drugs, assault, murder, rape and fraud, according to a media statement from the office of the provincial commissioner of the SAPS, Gauteng.
