Surrounding roads were flooded on what was otherwise a beautifully sunny day in the Western Cape.

According to witness Mike Roberts, officials were on the scene quickly to tow the vehicle (which had local CA number plates) away. The driver appeared to have escaped unscathed.

“There were loads of traffic cops and the streets were closed off,” Mike told SAPeople. “They were very efficient.”

Local residents took to social media to report that their water in nearby buildings had been turned off. UPDATE: City of Cape Town has confirmed in an alert that there is a “burst water main in St John’s Rd in Sea Point, St John’s Rd closed between Beach Rd and Main Rd.” The department is attending to it, and motorists are advised to use an alternative route for now.

Mike said: “There’s a massive hole where there was none yesterday”.

The incident occurred in St John’s Road, Sea Point, near to the Sea Point Pavillion swimming pools.

Earlier Tuesday the City of Cape Town posted photos of Mayor Dan Plato, joined by Alderman Felicity Purchase, visiting the City’s roads repair team today as they ramped up efforts to repair potholes created during the rainy season.
