Historic African representation at this year’s Cannes Film Festival

There are a record two African films competing in this year’s Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival (06/07/21 – 17/07/21) with one of the jury members being Senegal’s Mati Diop.

In a first for African films, two were selected for the official competition, Chadian film Lingui – The Sacred Bonds from director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, and Moroccan Casablanca Beats (Haut et Fort) from director Nabil Ayouch.

Another African film, Feathers, from Egyptian director Omar El Zohairy, is having its world premiere in a parallel competition, La Semaine de la Critique.

Finally the out of competition French film with an African focus, From Africa With Love has been chosen as the closing ceremony film.
