Chadian abortion drama, Lingui – The Sacred Bonds, directed by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, has reportedly been acquired by Mubi for distribution in North America, Latin America, the UK and Ireland.

Writer-director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun previously won the Cannes’ Jury Prize with A Screaming Man in 2011, and also had Grigris selected for competition in 2013.

His most recent film, Lingui – The Sacred Bonds, was produced by Florence Stern from French production company Pili Films, in association with Beluga Tree and Made in Germany Filmproduktion.

The film is set outside N’djamena in Chad, where Amina lives alone with her only 15-year-old daughter Maria. Her already fragile world collapses the day she discovers that her daughter is pregnant. The teenager does not want this pregnancy. In a country where abortion is not only condemned by religion, but also by law, Amina finds herself facing a battle that seems lost in advance…

Lingui – The Sacred Bonds explores the bond or ‘lingui’ between a mother and her daughter, as well as the importance of female solidarity in a patriarchal society.
