Il Divo baritone singer Carlos Marin has tragically passed away at the age of 53 after reportedly contracting Covid-19 in the UK.

The Spanish singer, who was born in Germany, had fallen ill on 7 December. He had been admitted to hospital in Manchester a few days ago, and had been intubated and placed in an induced coma. According to The Independent he was vaccinated, although it is not certain if he had yet received his booster shot. The Independent, Daily Mail and several other major news outlets reported that Carlos died from Covid, however the BBC said the nature of his illness has not been disclosed.

Carlos’ last performance was on 6 December, on stage in Bath. The band had then rescheduled its remaining UK Christmas tour “due to illness” to December 2022.

On Thursday the band revealed: “Our dear friend and partner, Carlos, is in the hospital. We are hoping and praying for a speedy recovery.” Yesterday they thanked fans for their prayers and well wishes.

But sadly on Sunday evening, Il Divo tweeted: “It is with heavy hearts that we are letting you know that our friend and partner, Carlos Marin, has passed away. He will be missed by his friends, family and fans. There wiIl never be another voice or spirit like Carlos.”

The band had been together since 2003 when it was created by pop mogul Simon Cowell.

Today, Il Divo said: “For 17 years the four of us have been on this incredible journey of Il Divo together, and we will miss our dear friend. We hope and pray that his beautiful soul will rest in peace. With Love — David, Sebastien and Urs”

Carlos’ ex-wife, French performer Geraldine Larrosa (aka Innocence), with whom he had remained close friends, had stayed by his side in hospital. They were due to perform together on New Year’s Eve.

Il Divo enjoyed a successful tour of South Africa in November 2018, where Carlos shared video greetings from Pretoria and Cape Town. Watch here:

The operatic pop – or ‘popera’ – band sold over 30 million copies of their albums since 2003 and over two million concert tickets. Carlos was born to sing… recording his first album at the tender age of eight.

The UK is experiencing a surge in cases, recording over 90,000 new positive cases per day.

Queen musician Brian May (74) is currently recovering from Covid-19 and has begged fans to get vaccinated, saying it’s the reason he’s recovering. The guitarist and astrophysicist said he suffered “two horrendous days” but is recovering. Speaking in a video on social media, Brian said: “But of course, there are so many people in hospitals right now who weren’t jabbed, who are right on the line between life and death. And I can’t emphasise to you enough: This is not the response that my body would have made on its own. It’s making this response because I’ve had three Pfizer jabs.

“And I beg you, and implore you, to go and get jabbed if you’re not already. Because you need the help. I lost one of my very best friends to COVID very early on. In six days it killed him. It could have done me, the last six days, but it didn’t because of the jabs.”
