Carte Blanche: Should Seismic Surveys Be Allowed to Continue Along SA's Coastline?

As Carte Blanche presenter Derek Watts says: “It’s the South African paradox – we are against seismic testing for oil around our coastline, but also not keen on buying electric vehicles. The decade ahead is going to prove how green we are prepared to be.”

Marine Biologist, Dr Simon Elwen insists more research is needed for SA waters. He is also frustrated by public misconceptions on the impact of seismic surveys. Dr Elwen says: “They have not been linked clearly to killing whales and dolphins. They clearly have behavioural impacts, they mask the communication of animals. There are many negative impacts, but it doesn’t result in mass strandings of animals.”

Seismic Survey Strife 

Despite calls to move away from fossil fuels, the world’s coastlines aren’t being spared the glare of petrochemical companies surveying for oil and gas. Now, it’s South Africa’s turn. Recent discoveries of significant natural gas reserves off our coast have attracted the interest of the world’s fossil fuel powerhouses.  Successful court interdicts coupled with widespread public outrage are so far keeping them at bay, blocking controversial seismic surveys off our pristine coastline, but for how long? As the dust settles on the first round of what is likely to be a protracted legal battle, Carte Blanche asks what lies in store for a government backing a fossil future and the activists trying to stop them.
