Disaster management teams have already responded to a number of incidents which include a wall collapse in eThekwini that sadly led to a fatality, mudslides that have been reported in KwaDukuza, flooding of Ladysmith town*… and road damage on the south coast, according to MEC for KZN’s Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Sipho Hlomuka. (Hollywood star Tom Cruise has been filming in and around Ladysmith this past week.)

Hlomuka said inclement weather conditions over the weekend had increased the risk of localised flooding across the province, as heavy rains continue.

“The latest level 5 weather warning from the South African weather service indicates that significant heavy rains will continue into the evening today in major parts of the province, especially the eastern parts.

“Residents are urged to exercise utmost caution and where possible, delay and suspend any activities that might leave them susceptive to incidents that might be caused by the heavy rains.” Road diversions are being implemented where possible.

SAPeople contributor Carol Malley is one of many who have been forced to work from home today. Carol says: “I couldn’t get down my driveway this morning even in a 4×4 ? . The 150mm of rain since 6pm last night has turned my driveway into a mud wrestling arena.”

Residents residing in low lying areas are urged to seek shelter on higher ground as the severe heavy rains is expected to cause even more localised flooding.

Hlomuka said: “The ongoing heavy rains, which come at a time when the ground is already saturated from the weekend’s rains, increase the risk of flooding in informal settlements, low-lying areas and bridges.”

Local disaster management teams continue to monitor high-risk areas across the province, and residents who experience any incidents should contact their respective ward councillor or local municipality, he said.
