The following breathtaking footage of the rocky, craggy, misty and always majestic Drakensberg was filmed by FPV Cinematic over three days in the Royal National Park, showing the sheer magnificence of the Berg and of South Africa’s prized Tugela Falls… which may or may not be the highest waterfall in the world. (See more below.) One thing’s for sure, it should be on everyone’s Bucket List…

Is Tugela Falls the Highest Waterfall in the World?

Until recently, the Tugela Falls, in KwaZulu-Natal, was known as the second highest waterfall on the planet with Angel Falls (or Kerepakupai Meru) in Venezuela holding the top spot, but various researchers have questioned the accuracy of measurements taken of Angel Falls back in the 1940s and have asserted that not all of Tugela Falls’ measurements were included before.

According to World Waterfall Database, Tugela Falls is now considered the World’s Tallest Waterfall in terms of Total Overall Height – with a height of 948 metres (3110 feet), more than any other waterfall in their list. The list includes 1,014 waterfalls in the world that have a total vertical drop greater than 152 metres (500 feet).

Angel Falls does still top the Tallest Individual Drop and Tallest Free-Falling Drop lists in the World Waterfall Database, thanks to its uninterrupted drop of a whopping 807 metres (2648 feet).

As the video shows, the Tugela Falls begin as a small stream (Thukela River) before suddenly dropping down the cliffs of the Drakensberg Mountains (Thukela/Tugela means sudden, rare or surprising) to continue its journey to the Indian Ocean. Sometimes the Tugela Falls dries up entirely… and at other times, it cascades down the cliff creating a cloud of magical mist.

Tugela Falls – which is officially the highest in Africa – consists of multiple tiers, with the first two (from the top) being 180m and 410m. The third tier’s exact height is still to be determined since the lower half is in an area that’s hard to access.
