WhatsApp is Down in South Africa and Other Parts of the World. UPDATE. WhatsApp is Back Up

Social media users from South Africa to France to India are rushing over to Twitter to find out if WhatsApp is down… and yes it is (as of 09h45 SA time). UPDATE: WhatsApp is back up – please see Meta’s statement at bottom of page.

“We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages and we’re working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible,” a Meta spokesperson said.

Most of us checked our wifi connections first… and then went to Twitter…

Downdetector said almost 15,000 users across South Africa had reported an outage, while the numbers for United Kingdom were at 68,000 and 19,000 for Singapore as of about 0750 GMT.

Downdetector tracks outages by collating status reports from a number of sources including user-submitted errors on its platform. The outage may have affected a larger number of users.

UPDATE 11h25: The service appears to have returned to normal. A spokesperson for WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta Platforms, said: “We know people had trouble sending messages on WhatsApp today. We have fixed the issue and apologise for any inconvenience.” The company did not disclose the reason for the outage.
