Just 24 hours after parting ways with Andre de Ruyter, Eskom has announced the appointment of Calib Cassim as its Interim Group Chief Executive Officer with immediate effect.
Cassim takes over the reins from De Ruyter who was released from his contract on Wednesday, 22 February 2023.
This was a day after De Ruyter made explosive revelations about the power utility’s affairs in an interview with eNCA.
He had been set to leave the parastatal at the end of March.

WHO IS THE NEW ESKOM CEO?
In a statement released early on Friday, 24 February, Eskom said its new Group CEO Calib Cassim will lead its management team until further notice.
Cassim was appointed as Eskom’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in November 2018 after serving as Acting CFO from July 2017.
“He is a registered Chartered Accountant (SA) and holds a master’s degree in Business Leadership (MBL). With over 20 years of service in Eskom, his qualifications and extensive experience have provided Mr Cassim with a deep understanding and appreciation of the Eskom business and the electricity industry, especially regarding the challenges facing the financing of operations and future expansion of the industry,” said Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha.

In his bombshell interview, De Ruyter said evidence suggests that the power utility is a feeding trough for the ANC.
He said he informed a senior cabinet minister about a plot involving a “high-level politician” to steal from the $8.5 billion fund meant to ensure a just energy transition.
On the back of the interview, the DA launched a Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) request seeking to compel the power utility to make public the information it has about alleged ANC corruption at Eskom.
