According to the Daily Mail, the football icon has over 108.3 million followers on South Africa-born Elon Musk’s social media site, but no longer has the ‘legacy verified checkmark’ which was previously used to confirm the validity of official accounts.

On Thursday, Twitter enforced new rules which saw thousands of accounts lose their blue ticks, regardless of how famous they are.

Users can now pay a monthly subscription of $8 (R145) to sign up to Twitter Blue, which comes with the blue tick along with access to other features such as longer video uploads and an edit button.

Author Stephen King, basketball legend LeBron James and Star Trek actor William Shatner have all retained their blue ticks.

Musk said that he was “paying for a few personally” and confirmed it was “just Shatner, Lebron and King”.

It comes after King tweeted on Thursday: “My Twitter account says I’ve subscribed to Twitter Blue. I haven’t. My Twitter account says I’ve given a phone number. I haven’t. “

Musk replied: “You’re welcome, Namaste.”
