Baby reunited with family at Bara Hospital after negligent discharge

A newborn baby was mistakenly discharged from with the family, but the security officer quickly intervened when he realised that the baby’s tag name didn’t match the mother.

NEWBORN BABY MISTAKENLY GIVEN TO WRONG FAMILY AT BARA HOSPITAL

When the officer realised the mistake, he alerted the nursing staff and an investigation was conducted.

According to New24, the 35-year-old woman who was sent home with the wrong baby had given birth to a baby boy the previous day, Monday, 17 April.

Gauteng Health and Wellness MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko confirmed that there was an error in the nature of a baby swap which was immediately corrected.

The already discharged mother and baby were fetched from their home and transported back to the hospital.

After health checks were done on the newborn, the baby was reunited with his 31-year-old biological mother, who was still admitted in hospital.

The Health Department has helped both families who were affected by the incident to undergo trauma counseling and deal with this horrific incident.

While the families have agreed to DNA testing to assure the baby, the MEC vowed that the health department will take corrective action for the gross negligence.

The health and wellness MEC commended the Bara Hospital security officer for his alertness, noting that the situation could have turned out worse for the baby and everyone.
