SA Rugby said on Wednesday it would monitor the rehabilitation of Springbok captain Siya Kolisi.

Kolisi had to undergo surgery on an injury suffered to his right knee in a recent Vodacom United Rugby Championship match.

The Springbok captain was forced off the field in the seventh minute during the Sharks’s match against Munster which ended in a 23-23 draw.

Kolisi underwent the operation on Friday and Springbok team doctor Jerome Mampane and his medical team will continue to monitor his recovery and rehabilitation. Mampane said it was too early to make any reliable forecasts on when Kolisi may be able to return to play.

Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber said wished the Boks captain a speedy recovery.

“We wish Siya well during his recovery and we know that he will do everything possible to return to play soon as possible.”

“Op went well, the hard work starts now. Thanks for all the prayers, messages, and support,” Kolisi said.

Last week Siya’s wife Rachel Kolisi took to social media to ask her followers to join her in praying for the Springbok captain.

“What a week,” she wrote on her Instagram page.“By Gods beautiful grace we made it! I can’t thank you all enough for every bit of love and support but above everything the prayers.”

“Forever in awe of Siya Kolisi and his ability to face challenges head-on, and with such a positive attitude. Hope you all had an opportunity to rest, this weekend and, soak up those you love most,” she said.
