Veteran Kaizer Chiefs keeper Itumeleng Khune has suggested that formal contract extension talks have yet to begin.

Recently, reports have suggested that some ‘positive’ initial talks had been held between Chiefs and Itumeleng Khune, who will turn 36-years-old in June.

These preliminary discussions may have been taking place between club bosses and the player’s representative, but Khune himself has stated that nothing formal has been addressed with him at this point.

“Right now we haven’t started negotiations. What’s more important is to finish the season on the high, that’s my main focus,” he stated in an interview on Marawa Sports Worldwide.

Khune is one of the most iconic players to have ever pulled on a Kaizer Chiefs jersey, and as his latest contract heads towards its end, there is every expectation that the stalwart will be handed a new deal.

Back in July 2021, Khune was one of the five Amakhosi players who were offered contract extensions, with the veteran signing a new two-year deal at that time.

He has emphatically stated on numerous occasions that he has no plans to retire and wants play until he is over the age of 40.

“For people to keep on saying that I must retire, I don’t understand. I might not be getting game time as much as I want but we had that discussion with the coach at the start of the season and my role is to guide the others.

“I can’t complain to the coach because I am not getting game time, I respect the coach and he respects me. My experience is needed in the team. I want to play until I am 40 plus but whether that will be at Chiefs is up to the club and what I bring to the table. I am not ready to retire.”

In a recent issue of Soccer Laduma, it’s reported that more exact contract discussions are only expected to take place after the final game of the season

Ultimately, though, the expectation is that there will be an extended role for Khune beyond this season, although nothing is being rushed at this stage.
