As the country continues to face blackouts, the demand for solar panels has increased, so is the theft of panels.

As rolling blackout continues and solar panel demand increase, thieves have found an opportunity to do what they do best- steal.

According to CapeTalk, theft of solar panels is on the rise.

This is made easy as many of them are in plain sight and are easy to remove.

THERE IS NO WAY TO TRACK STOLEN PANELS

They also don’t have serial numbers or identification numbers that would enable someone to see that they are stolen.

Thieves either strip the solar panels of their valuable parts, such as copper or sell the panels as they are.

“It is becoming more and more of a relevant problem with the insurance industry. The panels are high value… there is high demand for it.

solutions is accelerating therefore recognising the need for government to play a role to play in encouraging adaptation and mitigation.

“I am pleased to announce two tax measures to encourage businesses and individuals to invest in renewable energy and increase electricity generation.

“Individuals who install rooftop solar panels from 1 March 2023 will be able to claim a rebate of 25 per cent of the cost of the panels, up to a maximum of R15 000. This can be used to reduce their tax liability in the 2023/24 tax year. This incentive will be available for one year,” said Godongwana.
