The Springboks could use a split-squad system in this year’s Rugby Championship.

The plan is to send 15 men over to New Zealand ahead of the massive showdown with the All Blacks on 15 July while utilizing a the remaining members of the squad to take on Australia in Johannesburg on 8 July 2023.

“If there aren’t a lot of injuries, we’ll want to send 15 guys that way [to New Zealand] earlier. In the event of a number of injuries, we will fall back on our strongest team for both Tests,” Rassie Erasmus told Sunday newspaper Rapport.

This could certainly be a masterstroke move by Rassie.

In fact, Rassie could kill two birds with one stone. Firstly, having the best players fit and rested for the All Blacks. Furthermore, he could give several fringe players a chance to prove their worth against the Wallabies.

MASTERSTROKE AHEAD OF THE RUGBY WORLD CUP?

The same tactic saw the Boks win the 2019 Rugby Championship and the RWC in Japan in 2019.

Squad depth is key and healthy competition for positions will benefit the Boks in the long run. Rassie wants to have squad depth across the park.

When he did this four years ago, he discovered Hershel Jantjies, now he can give Grant Williams a rare Test start and opportunity to earn his place in the squad. The same can be said for fringe players in form in the URC such as Deon Fourie and Manie Libbok.
