Three South African stars rank among the world’s best universities
Universities in South Africa are gaining global recognition, with UCT, Wits and Stellenbosch ranking among the world’s best.
South African universities have strengthened their global standing in the latest international rankings. The results highlight the strength of South Africa’s leading academic institutions.
Three institutions feature among Africa’s leading universities, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027.
The University of Cape Town leads the South African field in joint 147th place globally. The University of the Witwatersrand follows in the 301–325 band. Stellenbosch University ranks in the 326–350 band.
WHY ARE SOUTH AFRICAN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS RISING?
Times Higher Education (THE) published its World University Rankings 2027 on 30 September 2026.
The ranking covers 2 297 universities across 118 countries and territories. THE assesses universities through five core areas, according to its 2027 ranking methodology. These areas cover teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook.
The methodology therefore examines much more than academic reputation alone.
UCT made the strongest move among South Africa’s leading universities. It climbed from joint 164th place to joint 147th globally. UCT also remains the highest-ranked university in Africa, according to THE’s 2027 Africa rankings.
UCT’s improvement reflects stronger research reputation, teaching reputation and research strength. UCT itself identifies these factors as key drivers behind its latest rise.
WHICH UNIVERSITIES LEAD SOUTH AFRICA?
UCT achieved an overall score of 62.4 in the latest rankings. Its research quality score reached 88.4, while industry scored 79.4. Its international outlook also performed strongly, reaching 77.7.
These figures help explain why UCT holds such a strong global position.
Wits secured second place among South African universities. It occupies the 301–325 global ranking band in the latest results.
Its industry score reached an impressive 92.8, the highest among these three universities. Wits also scored 71.3 for research quality and 72.6 for international outlook.
Those results underline its strong research and industry connections.
Stellenbosch University follows Wits in the 326–350 global band. It recorded a research quality score of 75.3 and an industry score of 90.9. Its international outlook reached 58.6.
Research and industry therefore remain important strengths for Stellenbosch.
WHAT MAKES THEM STAND OUT?
THE gives teaching a 29.5% weighting in its overall calculation. Research environment contributes 29%, while research quality contributes 30%.
International outlook carries 7.5%, while industry contributes 4%.
Research quality considers citation impact, research strength, excellence and influence. Research environment measures research volume, income and reputation. Industry considers income from industry and patents.
International outlook examines staff, students and research collaboration.
These measures explain why leading universities need more than strong teaching. Their research must influence knowledge while connecting with industry and international partners.
South Africa’s results show that its strongest universities can compete on this broader global stage.
UCT’s rise into the global top 150 provides the clearest example. Wits and Stellenbosch also reinforce South Africa’s academic reputation.
Together, these institutes give the country a strong presence in global higher education.
